Derby dentist: finding the right one

How to find a great dentist in Derby (or anywhere else!)

Although we tend to think of dentists only in terms of the health of our teeth and gums, the health of our mouths is strongly linked to our total health. As the main gateway to the human body, the mouth is interconnected with all the main systems of the body, including the skeleton, blood vessels, intestinal, nervous, endocrine, and lymphatic systems.

The most up-to-date medical research shows that something like 90% of systemic medical conditions are connected to symptoms within mouth. There is also strong evidence that heart disease, strokes, diabetes and lung disease could be caused, or at least worsened, by inadequate dental health: a good enough reason for finding the time to find a good quality dental practice.

Yet while looking for a dentist, almost all people take the easiest approach: typically choosing the same dentist as a family member or friend, the nearest dentist to their home or work, or merely the least expensive option out there. These tactics, although fast and easy, may result in major problems down the road, including:

* Having to pay an excessive amount for your dental care
* Needing to wait for a long time to get an appointment
* Feeling stressed and uncomfortable with your dental professional
* Choosing a dentist that doesn't suit your/your family's requirements

Although it might appear like a frightening task at first, finding the right dentist is actually not difficult. All it takes is a little time to consider several key issues before you choose. By doing this you will get a better understanding of the different options available to help you decide what best suits your circumstances, and your finances.

So, just which steps should you follow?

The very first thingl you need to do is generate a complete list of your needs and wants. Take into account such factors as the best location for your dental clinic, when you'd like to have your appointments, acceptable pricing, whether you'll use dental insurance or not, specific kinds of treatment required (for example, orthodontics or a dentist that specialises in treating anxious patients), and any specific psychological or "comfort factors" you consider to be important. Be sure to specify any "must haves" or "deal breakers" on your list (factors that are essential or that will make you instantly reject a dentist).

Once you have your list of needs and wants, the next thing is to develop a list of prospects in your neighborhood. The best way to do this is to use the internet. Say you're looking for dentists in Derby: you would search the internet for phrases such as Derby dentist or cosmetic dentist Derby, based on your needs. You'll find a list of useful websites and possibly the top social media results like Derby dentist on Squidoo, Derby dentist on YouTube and even Derby dentist on Facebook! You can then find out more about the dentist, what people are saying about him or her online and get crucial information you need to help you make a decision. Additionally, be sure to check the local phone book and ask friends and relations for their suggestions.

Once you have a list of prospective candidates, compare them to your list of needs and reject those that are wrong for you. Reviewing the dentists' sites will also help here. When you're down to a manageable number, look into contacting each dentist for an info pack, or to ask any specific questions you might have.

The last stage in your research is to actually look at the dental practice you have in mind. Have a look around, meet the team and ask any remaining questions. It's always a good idea to speak to the dentist and see if you feel comfortable with him or her. You should be ready to select the most suitable dentist and book yourself in for an appointment and/or a routine cleaning. Use this opportunity to evaluate your dentist and see if you'd like to stay there, or if you'd like to try another dentist from your list in the future.

By following these easy steps, you'll be able to find a much better match for your needs than 90% of other dental patients, and will feel safe in the knowledge that you you and your family can trust and feel comfortable with your dentist: something that really makes visiting the dentist a whole lot easier!

Great hub! I admit that I've neglected going to a dentist for way too long. So when I finally needed work done, it was serious stuff. But I've learned that you can't just go with your "local" friend referred, closest one. I've found through my research that most dentists are going after quantity, not quality. Researching what your options are and asking questions to compare what each dentists treatment plan is, is the best way to really know which dentist is really looking out for you as oppposed to the ones who are willing to do more damage to perfectly fine teeth to earn more money in the long run. Very infomative! =)
